Every
month there is a blizzard of information contained in the emails and
newsletters that cross my desk on their way to AutomatedBuildings.com.
Some of this information is not in the form of any type of content we
can publish but I feel I should share with you these snippets, blog
bits, and url links that are about to fall off my desktop.
Contemporary Controls has developed a free tool called BACnet Discovery Tool (BDT). "For OEM's that are providing their equipment into a building automation system requiring a BACnet/IP interface, BDT is a tool that can be used to verify the integrity of the BACnet/IP interface with the OEM's equipment. The OEM can confirm the BACnet data is available prior to handing off the equipment to a building automation integrator or a contractor," said Joe Stasiek, Sales Manager at Contemporary Controls.
The U.S. Department of Energy is
matching a $2.25 million Clean Energy Fund grant from the Washington
Department of Commerce to research, develop and demonstrate the
technologies needed to create 'smart' buildings, campuses and cities to
better manage energy usage. Once buildings and devices are
smarter—managing energy resources optimally on their own—they can also
be more responsive to the needs of the power grid.
The Global Partnership Alliance is unleashing investment and driving deep cuts in commercial building energy use. The GPA is convening key stakeholders to standardize, commercialize and monetize energy efficiency—and unlocking value of billions of dollars.
In this SlideShare David describes how the IoT allows
us to leave behind the hierarchical and linear corporate organizations
that were the only option in the day when data was limited, hard to
gather, and to share. Now by contrast, the IoT makes it possible
for EVERYONE WHO NEEDS IT TO INSTANTLY SHARE REAL TIME INFORMATION
ABOUT EVERYTHING (apologies for shouting!), which will allow everything
from more efficient organizations to profound changes in product
design. To visualize the change, think of the corporate organization as
circular, instead of hierarchical and linear, with IoT data right in
the middle -- the HUB of everything.
In a climate of digital disruption and
global market pressures, many manufacturers want to differentiate with
new service-oriented revenue models, especially those that rely on
connected machines and machineas-a-service. In a Cisco survey of more
than 600 senior executives in 13 countries—from both industrial machine
builders and end-user manufacturers—86 percent said the transition from
product-centric to service-oriented revenue models is a core part of
their growth strategies.

IoT Connectivity Takes Expertise Plus Experience
The step from unconnected to connected products is a daunting one.
Unlike the computers and smartphones and tablets we use to connect to
the Internet of Computers, the devices of the IoT were rarely designed
with connectivity in mind. Turning traditional products into connected
products requires specialized, deep knowledge and expertise in
networking, software development, cloud computing and other
technologies. In addition, it turns out that the expertise to build
connected devices comes only fromexperience actually building connected devices.

White-Tunable LED Lighting BY CRAIG DILOUIE, ON NOVEMBER 19, 2015 LED lighting can generate virtually any perceivable color as well as any shade of white light, all digitally controlled and selectable. Color output can be adjusted by mixing color LEDs, mixing white-light LEDs of different color temperatures, or a combination of the two. The key to achieving these effects is dimming.

Ultra Electronics, 3eTI®, a leading cyber-technology company with products and solutions that secure critical infrastructure and improve operational efficiency, today announced BACnet support for its CyberFence® product line. The new capability dynamically validates and secures all BACnet communications, adding security to vulnerable routes in the Building Automation Systems (BAS) used to control building operations for HVAC, lighting and more.
Tridium has created an all-new hardware platform optimized for Niagara 4: the JACE 8000 controller. This “next-generation” controller is a dramatic evolution in connecting and controlling devices worldwide, featuring a new global design that functions with legacy systems and has the ability to scale for future needs.
thethings.iO is the Internet of Things platform that enables fast and scalable connection of things to the Internet, allowing you to monitor and manage your devices in real time and get flexible analytic reports.
The Bluetooth SIG, which defines the specifications, is previewing upcoming features which will be included in its low power strand, Bluetooth LE (BLE) next year. These will increase the range, speed and meshing capabilities of the standard and make it more competitive against Thread and ZigBee, the other two main challengers for the smart home network (and beyond, in the case of BLE and ZigBee).

Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology removes the necessity for any backlight or enclosure, maximizing the impact of transparent displays. The virtually frameless display enables designers to overlay text, images, and video content onto objects set behind the glass display. "This is a very exciting development in transparent display because it is an emissive display, meaning the pixels on the face of the screen itself light up,” explained Jennifer Davis, vice president of marketing and product strategy at Planar Systems.
Augmented and Virtual Reality - An Expanded Role in Commercial and Corporate Real Estate? Author: Howard Berger, Managing Partner, Realcomm One
of the biggest technological developments over the past decade has been
the enhanced ability to visualize data in ways never imagined 50 years
ago. No longer limited to 2D representations of flat data, we can now
create elaborate 3D representations of re-combined data sets yielding
spectacular insights to very complex relationships. These rapid
advances in visualization technologies and their human interfaces have
opened the door to new and innovative ways to interact with big data
sets, including VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality).
