Barcode Reader Supervises Airport Taxi Lane

Taxis, shuttles and limos -- as weary passengers deplane and make their way toward terminal exits for transportation, the line of waiting commercial vehicles at the dedicated taxi lanes can extend beyond the pavement. At busy airports, dispatchers will quickly hail the next idling cab, to whisk the fare away. No fare jumping, nor overcrowded lane; indeed the old airport taxi stand has been altered forever. Much of the change can be attributed to commercial vehicle management systems that have cropped-up in recent years at major municipal airports. According to the Taxi, Limousine & Paratransit Association, 6,300 companies operating 171,000 taxicabs transport some 1.4 billion passengers annually, mostly business travel. The management systems are designed to eliminate chaotic pickup areas, identify contracted commercial vehicles at the airport and set dwelling fees.

RFID - RTLS or Printed Electronics?

Will RFID be "the way of the future" or will it be some other technology like RTLS (Real Time Location Systems); or will 'old-fashioned' Barcoding persist? Why not simply use printed electronics on 'smart chipless labels' to identify and track products for a fraction of the price of an RFID tag system? Recently, one company's team of world-renowned scientists successfully demonstrated that it is possible to detect and read multi-bit information from a fiber segment less than 40 microns in diameter (one inch long) at a distance of up to 25 meters.... which may lead to remote non-line-of-site barcode reading for merchandise tracking.

An Introduction to BACnet® (Code WEBS06 105) ASHRAE Online Seminar

Wednesday, April 12, 2006 – 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST
ASHRAE's BACnet® has been an ANSI standard since 1995 and has been widely adopted both in the U.S. and internationally. This standard has changed the way that designers, engineers and building owners/operators can use and apply building systems, and opened a new world of opportunities for multi-vendor and multi-discipline interoperability and integration. In this seminar, students will learn the fundamental principles of BACnet® as these relate to interoperability. The seminar will help students understand some of the elements required to successfully plan for BACnet® and some of the complex issues that must be addressed to achieve interoperability. Students will learn that interoperability covers a wide range of possible options, and how to simplify interoperability by defining specific areas where interoperability is required. Also discussed will be the basic components of any multi-vendor or multi-discipline BACnet® control system, how different systems can be merged together using BACnet®, and how BACnet® facilitates the integration of older systems with BACnet®-based systems. The seminar does not discuss specific manufacturers, or alternatives to BACnet® or BACnet® specification writing. Attendees will receive a discount toward the purchase of Standard 135-2001 - BACnet® and the BACnet® CD-ROM. Emerson to make big move into wireless space

The use of “wireless technology lowers the cost of installations by 90%,” said Emerson President John Berra as he unveiled the process control giant's plans for bringing aspects of the industry under the wireless umbrella at the ARC Advisory Group Forum in Orlando, Fla. Wireless remains a huge hot point in the industry these days, and this big initiative from Emerson just goes to show there are manufacturers that need wireless for things like predictive maintenance, finding blind spots in your plant where you don't take measurements, or getting diagnostic information from devices that have the capability, but a manufacturer never uses.

Internet Finding Few Newcomers in 2006

Dallas, TX Feb 23 - A new study from Parks Associates has found few new households willing to subscribe to Internet services, which will limit 2006 growth in overall Internet penetration to one percent, rising from 63% to 64% by year's end. According to "The National Technology Scan (2005)," a survey of 1,000 U.S. homes, there are currently 39 million homes without Internet access, and among these, only eight million own a computer, an obvious prerequisite for Internet adoption. Moreover, the majority of these PC households will not subscribe to an Internet service at any cost.
