More Examples of Data Mining   Ken Sinclair

Real-time Data Mining Strikes Pay DirtMy automation column in April issue of Engineered Systems has created some feedback and connection to some other resource that I would like to share with my readers.

Building Automation: A Golden Opportunity
Real-time data mining strikes paydirt.

John Fiegel of LBL writes; Sinclair I enjoyed your 'Golden Opportunity' article in ES. PPS Interval Data Systems is also marketing a system that appears similar to the Siemens/Cimetrics system in your article.

Thanks John for the link I checked it our and their web site does look interesting it opens with the following words

What does it mean to engineer your operations? For decades, facilities have been operating in the dark with an incredible lack of information. Data has been hard to use and even harder to get in the first place. As a result, facilities often operate on guesswork—a far cry from the precision and discipline of engineering. It's time to come out of the dark.

Imagine what you could accomplish with a platform for all operational data. With engineering equations measuring efficiency and costs. Where interacting with that data is nearly instantaneous and effortless. We've done more than imagine, and so have our clients.

Interesting words so I contact them and Kevin Fuller VP of Marketing  provided the following responses with linkage to these great resources that I wish to share with you.

 Ken,

I am interested in following up with you on some of this. We have a wealth of information on many topics related to data and HVAC systems (buildings and plant). The issue isn't having something worth writing about, but how much can we write in limited amounts of time.

Fastek Our product, EnergyWitness, collects data from every source we can--BASs (combine multiple BAS if they exist--this can total 50-100K data points for a large campus), meters (automated and manually read for all purchased and generated utilities), utility interval data, utility billing data, independent weather sources, and space planning systems. Once collected and normalized to 15 minute intervals, there are a variety of engineering equations we layer on top. These range from as simple as a Delta T to as complex as $/hour for running an entire plant. Collecting data is a major issue, but only part one. We make it extremely fast and interactive to view data, compare data from any source, move through time. Every time we connect our system, it completely changes how the facilities group operates. You can read our white paper that presents our overall vision (most of which is released--not future or beta--and in production at our clients' facilities). There are also some case studies and other publications you might find of interest.

I read your recent "Real-time Data Mining Strikes Pay Dirt" piece. We're successfully doing some of what is talked about there (and other pieces are still in the future or outside the domain of our focus). Our cofounder/CTO has been thinking about these issues for the better part of 30 years, and working on pieces for the past 20. EnergyWitness is bringing all his insights and efforts together.

Another paper you might like to read can be found here
http://www.intdatsys.com/pdfs/EnergyWitness-Diagnosing_Complex_Interactions.pdf

It's a case study that shows the complex interactions of a system, from chiller to VAV box, and how we diagnosed and addressed the issues, all remotely through data. During the peer review process it was referred to as, "...the clearest and best documented description I've seen of a problem migrating through the ENTIRE system." This is going to be published next week by PECI as part of the National Conference on Building Commissioning, so isn't generally available on our Web site yet.

Guess that's enough of an introduction for now. I look forward to talking and working with you in the near future.

As a final note, as well-received as our papers have been, they're nothing compared to seeing a demo of EnergyWitness in action. We'd be more than happy to schedule some time to give you a demo.

Thank you,
Kevin Fuller VP of Marketing Interval Data Systems, Inc.

We hope to hear more about Kevin's company and experiences in our future issues.
