I am currently exploring the Metaverse as a platform for transforming education.
In that context, I have been working on the idea for a Chief Learning Officer in the Metaverse with Pinckney Benedict
These are early stage ideas but I can see a lot of potential in future.
We welcome your thoughts
To summarise,
The idea of a Chief learning officer is not new. Some of the concepts of a Chief Learning Officer translate to the metaverse
But we believe that the Chief Learning Officer in the metaverse will be more dynamic i.e. a person who will facilitate peer to peer learning in a hybrid work environment implemented through the metaverse as one of the foundational technologies for creating learning artefacts within organizations.
In that sense, we believe in Chief Learning Officers(plural) as a decentralized facilitator of peer to peer learning on the metaverse. We adopt a specific definition for the metaverse as below. Ultimately, this could lead to emergent organizations rather than the static command and control driven organizations that we see today
The earliest proponent of the title Chief Learning Officer(CLO) was GE’s Jack Welch in the 1990s. The CLO was the highest-ranking corporate officer in charge of learning management. This includes Coaching, Engagement, Mentoring and leadership development. HBR in the Transformer CLO has a more nuanced perspective. In their view, a chief learning officer is not a trainer, instead they are transformers reshaping their organization along four dimensions: broadening learning goals, adopting new learning methods, transforming learning departments and curating content
Now, we proposed that the Chief Learning Officer in the metaverse will be more dynamic ie a person who will facilitate peer to peer learning in a hybrid work environment implemented through the metaverse as one of the foundational technologies for creating a learning artefact.
We believe that hybrid environments will be here to say
In this sense, the Chief Learning Officer can be a competitive advantage / glue for future companies who adopt hybrid work.
This is actually cost effective for organizations if education within enterprises becomes peer to peer.
Instead of traditional classrooms, employees get together to solve complex problems by creating a learning artefact in the metaverse
