CONNECT 2000: WIDENING THE NET
A unique control system that connects to the Internet is set to revolutionise the way buildings are managed. Connect 2000, developed by NTP company Lighthouse Communications Ltd, expands the Internet to more than just an information tool - with Connect 2000, the net can be used to monitor and control equipment, buildings and utility usage from a simple PC in a single location.
"Connect 2000 gives you real time information at your finger tips from any location," said Eamon O'Dea, managing director of Lighthouse Communications. "Over the next five years, we are confident that the market for Connect 2000 in Ireland and the rest of Europe will expand as rapidly as the mobile phone market has in recent years. Now that the use of mobile phones and PCs is so widespread, consumers and business managers are ready for this latest technology."

In its control networking products, Lighthouse Communications is applying leading-edge technology to connect everyday devices to the Internet, so that the running processes in buildings, factories and homes can be monitored and controlled via the web. This has the potential to vastly change the way we live, heralding the arrival of truly 'smart' buildings that can react to commands from a remote PC or laptop.
The connectivity provided by Connect 2000 means that components in our buildings, such as light switches, locks and electrical sockets, which we previously thought of as purely mechanical objects can now respond intelligently to building owners' commands via this Internet-based LonWorks building control system. Connected devices represent a huge new information source, extending the reach of the Internet into ordinary physical reality: via the web, all electronic devices within a building can be controlled, monitored and activated.
"Connect 2000 is a very cost-effective solution," said Sean O'Connell, Product Development Manager. "In Sweden, a major electricity supplier is doing a large integration of systems like ours into 400,000 homes. By connecting to the net, energy costs in each home are being monitored from a centralised location. So far, the results of this project are very encouraging - there is a huge amount of interest in the new building control systems from home owners. Now that we have WAP technology in Ireland, the opportunities for using Connect 2000 are even greater." Monitor and control your factory or business from your desktop PC
Connect 2000 is aimed at building owners who want to be in complete control of their properties' functionality. Retail outlets, hotels, offices, financial and educational institutions, government departments and local authorities can all benefit from Connect 2000's ability to manage energy and security, log data and maintain industrial equipment either on-site or at a centralised location.
With Connect 2000, home owners can check their homes while away or at work, controlling heating, lighting, access and alarm systems from a remote PC or laptop. The system will also assess the performance of appliances, monitor energy costs and control energy demands over the net.
Connect 2000 has already been used by Clare County Council in a remotely located water pumping station near Ennis. Water flow through the tower's four sets of pipes is being monitored by Connect 2000 from a centralised location in Ennis. Devices and equipment in the water tower are also controlled from this location and data is logged and checked automatically.
"We are convinced that the potential for systems like Connect 2000 is enormous," concluded O'Dea. "People are now very computer-literate, have basic keyboard skills and are well used to using mobile phones. Internet access is so easy now - it's up to leading edge technology firms like ours to broaden the use of the net."
