“Energy at Work” shows how science and math apply to careers in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) technology
MILWAUKEE – (March 31, 2008) –Johnson Controls, Inc. is teaming up with the National Foundation for Energy Education (NFEE) and Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) to host “Energy at Work,” a day-long workshop of interactive demonstrations in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. Students in HVACR, construction and technical education classes at select Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) will be invited to participate in the seminar.
The workshop will be held on April 9 in the newly opened Energy Conservation and Advanced Manufacturing (ECAM) building located at MATC’s Oak Creek campus.
The goal is to engage a new generation of workers in the HVACR field, which is facing a nationwide talent shortage. According to the U.S. Department of Labor statistics, employers report their greatest labor market needs as skilled and semi-skilled workers with post-secondary education, technical training, associate degrees, certification, licensing, or occupation-specific experience. In fact, jobs with these requirements now make up 80 percent of the full-time job openings in the Milwaukee metro area.
The sessions will be led by Jerry Katz (a.k.a. Mr. Energy), president of NFEE, whose creative use of magic, comedy, and proven instructional strategies has reached hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. Attendees will be treated to interactive demonstrations that show how technicians and engineers use thermal and internal energy concepts in practical applications every day.
“This workshop is designed to show students who excel in math and science that they can translate these abilities into a promising career in HVACR,” said Shannon Lippold, CareerConnect program manager at Johnson Controls. “With a growing need to fill these types of positions, the local workforce will also benefit.”
