Lippold forged collaborative partnership between MATC and Johnson Controls

MILWAUKEE – (April 8, 2008) – Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) has named Shannon Lippold of Johnson Controls, Inc. the recipient of the All-Trades Apprenticeship Distinguished Service Award. The award is presented annually to someone whose work exemplifies the type of corporate partnership MATC seeks to enhance instruction in the trade professions. Each year, a college committee submits award recommendations to MATC president Darnell Cole for approval.

"We are honored to have Mrs. Lippold as our 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipient,” said Dr. Darnell Cole, president of MATC. “Her enthusiasm has helped us develop a strong partnership with Johnson Controls."

By spearheading collaborative programs between Johnson Controls and select educational institutions, Lippold has been instrumental in engaging a new generation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) workers.

As operations program manager at Johnson Controls, Lippold oversees two programs promoting technical education – CareerConnect and the Future Hires Program. Through CareerConnect, Johnson Controls donates resources and tools to partnering schools, including MATC, to simulate the work environment and enhance the program curriculum. Students enrolled in HVAC programs at CareerConnect partner colleges are also eligible for the Future Hires Program. Launched in 2007, the program guarantees jobs with Johnson Controls for select, exceptional students.

The overall goal of these programs is to meet the growing needs of the HVACR industry by increasing the number of skilled program graduates entering the workforce. According to employment projections reported by the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, the total number of HVACR-related skilled trade positions will jump from 291,000 in 2006 to more than 317,000 by 2016.

The annual event recognizes apprentice program graduates and celebrates MATC's critical partnerships with local businesses and trade unions. This year, MATC will honor 202 apprentice graduates, including 37 graduates from HVAC trades.
