Adjustments to operations help secure Silver
Certification and significant savings
MILWAUKEE (August 16, 2010) – Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), the global leader in
delivering products, services and solutions that increase energy efficiency in
buildings, congratulates the Dallas Convention Center for recently earning a
LEED® Existing Building (EB) Silver Certification established by the U.S. Green
Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification
Institute (GBCI).
In an effort to improve the environment of the 2.2-million-square-foot facility
and participate in the city’s green buildings initiative, the Dallas Convention
Center commissioned a large-scale renovation of the building, including an
aggressive adjustment to operational procedures. To assist in those efforts, the
City of Dallas engaged Johnson Controls through a 10-year Energy Saving
Performance Contract (ESPC) to provide a turn-key solution and guide the LEED EB
Certification efforts in deploying conservation measures designed to reduce
water, electricity and natural gas consumption.
In addition to securing LEED EB Silver Certification, the Dallas Convention
Center, via the ESPC project with Johnson Controls, implemented sustainable
operation components, including renewable energy technology, chiller plant
equipment replacements, electrical lighting fixture changes, plumbing fixture
replacements and sophisticated building controls throughout the facility. The
improvements are currently exceeding the $2 million of guaranteed annualized
utility savings.
“The new and improved Dallas Convention Center demonstrates the ability to
successfully incorporate sustainable elements into existing buildings that
significantly improve building efficiencies and achieve substantial savings in
the process,” said Mark Wagner, vice president, Government Relations, Johnson
Controls. “We're proud to be a part of the team that helped green the Dallas
Convention Center.”
Located in the Dallas downtown Central Business District, the Dallas Convention
Center is the venue for 2010 GovEnergy, the federal government’s premier energy
training workshop and tradeshow that brings together government facility
managers and vendors to learn about the latest in energy efficiency technology.
In keeping with the theme of the Aug. 15-18 show, “Blazin’ Trails to Energy
Solutions,” Johnson Controls will highlight projects that showcase how federal
organizations have embraced energy independence.
The Johnson Controls exhibit, located at Booth #133, will focus on the company’s
long-standing, successful partnerships with federal agencies and helping them
achieve global efficiencies. Company experts will be available to discuss
various solutions that impact government agencies around the world, including
energy savings performance contracts, building automation systems and renewable
energy solutions.
Highlighted projects include:
• U.S. Army, Fort Bliss, New Mexico and Texas – The Army is building renewable
generation systems to improve energy security. Johnson Controls helped design
and install highly efficient solar photovoltaic arrays, added 50 tons of solar
cooling, improved living conditions through solar thermal heating for barracks
and the community pool, and integrated utility metering to UMCS in more than 125
buildings.
• The Pentagon, Washington, D.C. – The Pentagon is increasing operational
capabilities and reducing energy consumption through a major renovation project.
Johnson Controls is helping measure and manage environmental comfort, energy
usage and lighting through its Metasys® building management system; upgrading
indoor air quality; providing efficient lighting control systems; and updating
the SCADA system. In addition, Johnson Controls supplied ten 3,750-ton York®
chillers for the heating and refrigeration plant.
• Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri – Whiteman is modernizing critical
facilities controls systems to improve operational efficiencies. Johnson
Controls implemented a base-wide Metasys® energy management and control system;
replaced pneumatic controls to increase system functionality and reduce energy
consumption; and installed innovative control sequences to improve indoor air
quality. In addition, the company is monitoring user consumption through
electric and gas metering to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and
Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

• U.S. Army, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland – Johnson Controls is providing
mission support through a wide range of systems and solutions. Activities
include integrating environmental controls and utility metering for energy and
infrastructure monitoring; modernizing mission-critical lab and research
facilities through design/build contracts; and achieving more than $70 million
in energy savings through a 15-year ESPC.
• Bureau of Land Management, Western U.S. – Johnson Controls is improving the
bureau’s energy efficiency in 11 states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado,
Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming). As part of a
three-phase ESPC, Johnson Controls developed and awarded each phase in less than
nine months, covered 163 bureau sites and installed 1 MW of total renewable
energy generation capacity. As a result, the bureau is reducing energy usage by
30 percent.
• U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms, California –
Johnson Controls is helping the Marine Corps save $138 million in energy costs.
Specifically, the company guaranteed savings of nearly $6.9 million a year over
a 20-year period; reduced the center’s overall environmental impact, including
limiting carbon emissions; and created better living conditions and more
efficient operations through savings achieved by facility improvements.
In addition, Johnson Controls’ leadership team will present at a number of
sessions throughout the conference. Featured speakers and sessions include:
• Paul Rode, senior account executive, “Building Retrofit Lessons Learned.”
• John Ruiz, director, Energy and Sustainability Technologies, “ISO 50001:
International Standard on Energy Management.”
• Jonathan Schurr, systems team leader, “Reality Check: Insights into Innovative
Metering Solutions from Case Studies.”
• Mark Wagner, vice president, Government Relations, “Energy Legislation and
Policy Update.”
• In addition, Mark Duszynski, vice president, business development, Federal
Systems, will conduct three sessions in the Metering and Energy Management
Control Systems (EMCS) track.
