New Solution Allows Customers to Provide Real-Time
Equipment Performance and Store Condition Visibility to ‘Extended Enterprise’
without VPNs or Security Vulnerabilities
AUSTIN, Texas – August 26, 2010 – Site Controls, the nation’s leading provider
of enterprise-wide energy management, facilities intelligence and Smart Grid
solutions, today announced that it has deployed Site-Command LiveView across its
growing network of retailers, restaurants, health clubs and branch banks.
LiveView enables chain operators to provide secure, real-time visibility and
control of on-site equipment and telemetry to authorized business partners such
as HVAC contractors, maintenance dispatch companies, remote monitoring providers
and energy procurement firms.
One of the constant challenges facing the IT community is how to provide access
to external users while maintaining security over company data. With the
increasing number of IP-networked devices and “smart appliances,” this challenge
will only grow in the future. The traditional approach to providing access to
on-site equipment requires IT administrators to establish a VPN (Virtual Private
Network) for each user. Multiple VPNs introduce additional IT overhead, training
requirements, system maintenance tasks and potential security vulnerabilities.
With LiveView, internal and external users gain secure access to on-site
information in real time without the need for a dedicated VPN connection, thus
reducing costs and complexity. LiveView leverages the existing connectivity
infrastructure of the Site-Command Data Center to provide a secure “tunnel” to
the Site-Command Controller, accessed through a standard web browser. Users have
visibility to a wide range of telemetry, such as energy meter data, HVAC
equipment performance, lighting, site environmental conditions, overrides and
sensors. LiveView is particularly useful for service providers such as HVAC
technicians, who can remotely test equipment or force heating/cooling actions in
real-time to facilitate troubleshooting.

LiveView is essentially the “last mile” in Site Controls’ enterprise approach to
energy management. Working with a dedicated Client Services team, chain
operators regularly review system-wide performance indicators using tools such
as the Site-Command Energy Dashboard™, Exceptions Dashboard™ and AnalyticEngine™.
Based on metrics such as kWh per sq. ft., override states, or nighttime kW, a
handful of site “outliers” are identified for further investigation via
Site-Command QuickView, which provides a consolidated display of all telemetry
for a given site. Users drill down via LiveView to see real-time conditions for
specific equipment, such as a non-functioning HVAC unit. As a cloud-based
solution, Site Command provides all of this information in a completely
integrated, cross-enterprise platform, without requiring customers to host or
configure their own back-end systems.
“The value created by an energy management platform grows considerably when
service partners have data visibility,” said Dan Kubala, vice president of
marketing for Site Controls. “By providing secure, real-time access to site
telemetry, LiveView allows chain operators to involve their extended enterprise
in driving down energy and maintenance costs.”
