Program grooms building technicians on leading systems; guarantees jobs for graduates

MILWAUKEE – (June 26, 2008) – In a time of increased demand for skilled building technicians, the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) has been selected by Johnson Controls, Inc. (NYSE: JCI), the global leader in providing smart environments, to participate in a collaborative program dedicated to recruiting and training the next generation of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) technicians.

Through the CareerConnect program, Johnson Controls donates resources and equipment to partnering schools to support existing curriculum and simulate the work environment. The company’s contributions to CSN will include classroom and lab learning materials, instruction from local industry experts, and faculty development opportunities. In total, Johnson Controls will donate more than $10,000 to CSN through the CareerConnect program over the next three years.

Johnson Controls will also team with the school through various community initiatives to increase awareness of career opportunities available to skilled technicians. According to employment projections reported by the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, the total number of HVAC-related skilled trade positions in Nevada alone will increase more than 54 percent by the year 2014, with nearly 1,000 new job openings.

Students enrolled in CSN’s Air Conditioning Technology or Electronic Engineering Technology associate degree program are also eligible for the Johnson Controls Future Hires Program. This opportunity guarantees select students scholarship money to help mitigate tuition costs and a technician job with Johnson Controls upon graduation. Students can apply for program inclusion after they have completed the first year of their associate degree program. Up to five students from CSN can be selected annually for participation.

“The agreement we have with Johnson Controls represents an ideal interaction between industry and education,” said Dr. Michael Spangler, dean, School of Applied and Advanced Technologies, College of Southern Nevada. “This affords the student a seamless transition from school to a rewarding profession with a world-class company.”

The CareerConnect program also showcases the company’s dedication to the communities in which it serves. Through its local network of service professionals, including branches located in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, Johnson Controls offers a team of experts and a range of service solutions designed to improve facility performance and keep customer facilities running right.

To date, the College of Southern Nevada is one of 12 CareerConnect partnerships that Johnson Controls has established throughout North America. Colleges are evaluated based on school and program demographics including diversity statistics, curriculum and ability to modify it, geographic areas served, enrollments, placement statistics, strategies, and its relationship with Johnson Controls.
