New energy management approach will reduce carbon footprint and energy costs across three campuses

DALLAS – July 09, 2015 – Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management and automation, today announced an energy efficiency project with the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD). When completed, the project will improve energy and operational efficiency across three district campuses through the installation of utility metering technology, new user interfaces for building and utility management and advanced system analytics. The upgrades will create a cohesive facility management system that will help increase efficiency, improve maintenance and operations capabilities and assure 82 buildings throughout the district support student learning while reducing energy waste.

SMCCCD is a three-college district located between San Francisco and Silicon Valley serving more than 40,000 students each year and offering the first two years of instruction in a wide variety of transfer programs as well as more than 90 vocational-technical programs. Students can earn either Associate in Arts or Science degrees or receive Certificates of Proficiency in their chosen fields.

As part of the project, Schneider Electric will upgrade the district’s building automation and control systems and install its Building Analytics solution, which provides continuous real-time analysis of all building systems and converts data into actionable insights to identify energy and cost-saving opportunities. SMCCCD is the first community college in California to bring building control, energy management and building analytics onto one platform, allowing facility managers to visualize, analyze and realize significant energy savings. Once completed later this year, the district will have the ability to continually monitor and improve its energy performance from a single interface while achieving its broader education goals.

“San Mateo County Community College is committed to being intelligent and intentional about resource use. We know that we can effectively protect the environment, maximize our utility savings and appropriately focus on maintaining affordable, high quality education to our community,” said Joe Fullerton, SMCCCD’s Energy and Sustainability Manager. “We’re excited to partner with Schneider Electric on this project and to leverage their expertise to support the mission of the District. Together we can continue the critical work of engaging our campus communities in our sustainability initiatives. This project is a fantastic example of how we are supporting “living labs” and using all available resources to optimize the educational environment for our students and staff.”

“We worked closely with the San Mateo County Community College District to understand their unique energy needs and transition legacy systems to an integrated energy system that will deliver valuable insights to help meet their sustainability goals,” said Orlando Perez, vice president of Systems Integration West, Buildings Business, Schneider Electric. “The solutions we are providing will positively serve the district and its students for years to come and will allow their officials to focus on programs that directly impact student learning instead of their utility bills.”
