The OPC Foundation would like to announce a new working group for the creation of a companion specification that describes an OPC UA (IEC 62541) information model for Power Generation. This is a working group with the participation of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and OPC Foundation. Many vendors already provide classic OPC Servers that are used in power generation. However, in addition to the missing object oriented capabilities in classic OPC, existing OPC Servers typically expose a vendor specific representation power generation data. The OPC Foundation Power Generation Working Group will develop an OPC UA Plant Integration Model (PIM) including: Wind, Hydro, Solar, Thermal, and Distributed Energy Resources.  The PIM is focused on lowering the cost of integrating a generation control systems with other applications.  The focus is not the decomposition of systems, but rather lowering the cost of integration via shared semantic models.

OPC UA can be used to convey a wide variety of data.  Today OPC UA can be used to convey IEC 61850 and IEC 61970 CIM data.  Over the longer term, the PIM will support and harmonize as much as possible the following standards:

•         ISO 15926 Industrial automation systems and integration
•         IEC 61850, Communication Networks and Systems in Substations
•         IEC 61400, Wind Turbine Generator Systems
•         SunSpec Alliance Specification
•         OpenADR, Open Demand Response
•         IEC 61968, Common Information Model (CIM) / Distribution Management
•         IEC 61970, Common Information Model (CIM) / Energy Management

contemporary OPC Foundation is looking for volunteers interested and able to participate in this important working group. Participation is open to any employee or representative of an OPC Foundation Member company or a member of EPRI with knowledge of OPC UA or power generation.
