Major European Organizations Launch SB Alliance

28 April, British Embassy, Paris  -  Today, the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Batîment (CSTB) of France and the UK-based Building Research Establishment (BRE) announced the launch of a new organization that is intended to greatly accelerate the international adoption of sustainable building (SB) practices through the promotion of shared methods of building performance assessment and rating.

The new organization is called SB Alliance and the Board will initially consist of Alain Maugard (President of CSTB, France), Dr. Martin Wyatt (Chief Executive of BRE Group, UK), José Joaquim do Amaral Ferreira (CEO of FACV, Brazil) and, as an observer, Eva Schminke (VP of DGNB, Germany). Organizations from over 20 countries have expressed serious interest in participating, and attended the launch event.

[an error occurred while processing this directive] The International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE) will be providing technical support. Preliminary plans for the new organization were explained by Alain Maugard of CSTB and by Martin Townsend of BRE on behalf of Dr. Martin Wyatt. Mr. Peter Graham , Coordinator of the Sustainable Building and Construction Initiative (SBCI) of UNEP underlined the importance of the work to be carried out by the Alliance. The opening event attracted some 85 persons from more than 20
countries.

The launch event was followed the next day by a half-day working session that focused on a preliminary discussion of technical and organizational issues. A second full technical meeting will be held in Stuttgart in mid-June.

The organizational model emulates the successful airline alliance organizations such as Star Alliance and SkyTeam. SB Alliance will similarly pursue an approach of common metrics for key issues with the intent of providing transparency between building assessment rating systems whilst recognising the need for genuine regional and national differences to be reflected within such systems For further information, please contact: Clare Lowe, BRE Global at <lowec@bre.co.uk> and / or
