Demonstration Shows How Cities and Businesses Can
Decrease Energy, Management, and Maintenance Costs for Streetlights and Lighting
in Large Commercial Facilities Using Smart Control Networking
(San Jose, CA - May 4, 2009) - At the LIGHTFAIR International Tradeshow and
Conference Echelon (NASDAQ: ELON) will display how its smart control networking
technology can be used for both street lighting and hi-bay lighting systems.
Echelon’s control technology is lamp independent, potentially bringing the
benefits of decreased energy use, lower operating costs, remote monitoring and
control, and improved service to the diverse outdoor and indoor lighting
markets.
For smart streetlights, Echelon’s technology can be used to lower a city’s
lighting related energy use - even when using highly energy efficient LED lamps.
From Anchorage to Oslo, to Ville de Quebec and now to San Francisco and San
Jose, CA, cities are looking for ways to make themselves more environmentally
conscious and energy efficient. Since streetlights are often up to 40% of a
city’s total electric bill, they are a high priority in terms of using the
latest technology for environmental and economic savings. Smart control
networking builds on the efficiency of new lamps – potentially lowering costs
and improving service through such capabilities as early detection of failing
streetlights, outage detection, light output balancing, and dimming - all while
providing safer and more beautiful city streets, roads and highways.
For hi-bay indoor lighting systems, Echelon’s smart control technology can allow
them to participate in demand response programs by giving owners and managers
the ability to individually dim and monitor the powerful lights in warehouses,
big-box retailers, airport hangers, and other large buildings. Doing so can
dramatically lower energy use and costs – especially important in times of high
demand on the grid. The benefits of controls in hi-bay lighting systems goes
beyond energy to include adaptive lighting controls, real-time light output to
provide optimal lighting conditions at all times, remote control & monitoring of
individual lamps, and integration with existing building control systems.
