HPAC FASTRACK, November 2006 - When a company decided to build its new headquarters nine times larger than the original, energy efficiency was a challenge
By Edward H. Brzezowski, PE
Engineers rarely have a building owner willing to spend money to generate more
power than a building needs. When that happens, it is important (and fun) to get
it right. This article describes the systems, lessons, and immediate results of
a building that my firm, a heavy-construction and construction-management
company, built for itself to serve as a corporate headquarters and interactive
showcase of energy technologies for potential clients.
This article will discuss the HVAC, solar-electricity, and controls systems in the facility. Featured in the building are rooftop air-conditioning units, radiant-slab heating systems, solar-heated domestic hot water, a solar-electric system (panels and inverters), and an advanced building-automation system that integrates the systems and enables real-time remote monitoring and sophisticated Web-based reporting.
