Sontay, the industry leader in building control peripherals, sponsored Russell Murdoch to undertake the incredible feat of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in support of Childreach International, a voluntary organisation which helps to improve the lives of children in various countries.
Russell, the son of Sontay’s Finance Director, Boyd Murdoch, and 29 other students from St Andrews University set off from Heathrow Airport on Monday 27 August 2012 to start their exciting trip. Planned by Childreach International, the epic adventure took them to Tanzania, Africa, where the 5,895 metres high Kilimanjaro Mountain was waiting. With hundreds of volunteers taking part every year, “Climb Kili 4 kids” is one of Childreach internationals flagship events. Every participant had to raise a minimum target of £2,500, with half going to Childreach international projects around the world.
As well as climbing the mountain, there was also the opportunity for participants to spend time with the children that will benefit of the sponsorship and the chance to extend the stay and visit more parts of Tanzania.
“The trip was incredible,” says Russell Murdoch. “It was a seven day trek up the mountain and the climb was very tough, on average we were walking about six to seven hours a day. Our group did really well, all apart from one member managed to reach the summit. I had to spend the three weeks wearing rented or borrowed clothes from friends in the group as before the climb my baggage was lost in transit and sent back to Scotland. I even had to borrow boots from someone at another university who had just completed the climb!

Trevor Palmer, Sontay’s Managing Director comments “We were delighted to be able to support Russell in this amazing endeavour. We are always keen to support our staff and their families in the activities they undertake. This is for a wonderful cause and we wish Russell well in his training and the climb itself.”
