Testing of HomePlug AV Chips Ensures Interoperability
and Compliance with HomePlug AV and IEEE 1901 International Powerline Networking
Standards
Portland, Ore. – September 14, 2010 – The HomePlug® Powerline Alliance today
announced that three different chipset vendors – Atheros Communications, Gigle
Networks and SPiDCOM Technologies – are participating in the second annual
silicon vendor plugfest for interoperability and compliance testing for the
HomePlug AV specification, including compliance with the new IEEE 1901 powerline
networking standard. The event is taking place this week in Tours, France with
testing performed by the Laboratoire des Applications Numériques (LAN) using
advanced testing tools from Spirent Communications plc.
The HomePlug chipset interop plugfest is the world’s only testing event for
broadband, multimedia-class powerline networking with multiple vendors to help
ensure interoperability and compliance with global standards.
“More than 50 million HomePlug chips have been deployed, and that number is
expected to reach 100 million by the end of 2011,” said Rob Ranck, president of
the HomePlug Powerline Alliance. “A robust testing and certification program is
essential to ensure multivendor interoperability and provide a reliable
foundation for the market. We have the industry’s largest broadband-speed
powerline testing and certification program and have certified over 215 HomePlug
products to date.”

HomePlug devices account for more than 80 percent of the world's broadband-speed
powerline communications market. The HomePlug standards family includes HomePlug
AV for broadband applications such as HD Video streams, HomePlug Green PHY (GP)
for smart grid applications, and HomePlug AV2, the next-generation Gigabit-class
broadband standard. HomePlug AV, AV2 and GP are fully interoperable with each
other and the IEEE 1901 powerline standard.
The alliance works with key stakeholders to ensure all of its specifications are
designed to meet the requirements of IPTV service providers, power utilities,
equipment and appliance manufacturers, consumer electronics and other important
stakeholders. HomePlug operates the leading Compliance and Interoperability
Certification Program for powerline networking to help ensure true multi-vendor
co-existence and interoperability.
