BACnet Protocol Expands Dominant Market Share in Latest Market Research Report

BACnet International released an updated BACnet Market Adoption Report, drawn from the BSRIA’s Market Penetration of Communications Protocols 2018 – 2027 market research study. BSRIA is a premier provider of market intelligence in HVAC and Building Automation and Control (BACS). This study is a follow-up to BSRIA’s 2018 “Market Penetration of Communications Protocols” study. Jeremy Towler, Senior Market Intelligence Consultant for BSRIA, presented several findings at the 2024 AHR Expo during BACnet International’s Global Community Outlook.

According to BSRIA research, BACnet is the leading protocol, with 77% of projects specifying BACnet worldwide. The protocol’s growth is fueled by multiple drivers, including environmental, social, and government regulations, sustainability, workforce satisfaction, energy efficiency, cybersecurity, and digitalization. Among BACnet, KNX, LonWorks, Modbus, and proprietary protocols, BACnet is the only protocol forecasted to make significant market share gains over the next several years.

Towler gave insights on the protocol market share by region. Currently, BACnet holds 95% of the North American market, 83% in Latin America, 67% in the Middle East, 65% in Europe, and 62% in Asia Pacific.

In addition to market analysis by region, Towler also gave a breakdown of each protocol’s market by controller type. BACnet is specified in 79% of building controllers, 81% of HVAC controllers, and 72% of room controllers.

The BSRIA research included information on communication protocol share in India. Currently, BACnet has a 61% overall market share, with BACnet/IP holding 38% and BACnet MS/TP holding 23%. BACnet is forecasted to dominate India’s market with a 70% share, with BACnet/IP forecasted to increase its share to around 49% by 2028.

This latest market research data reflects BACnet’s central role in the industry as the integration platform for building automation that simultaneously achieves cost, performance, and climate impact objectives,” said Andy McMillan, president of BACnet International. He continued, “The demands of that role drive continued BACnet evolution to address emerging performance and cybersecurity needs while maintaining multivendor interoperability.”

The BACnet Market Adoption Report was developed and released exclusively to BACnet International Corporate Members to provide current and projected market share data on the BACnet protocol and proprietary protocols in specific regions. The report is now available to the public.

BACnet International remains committed to facilitating the successful future use of the BACnet protocol worldwide through testing and certification (BACnet Testing Laboratories (BTL)) and education (The BACnet Institute).
