NetSilicon and Adept Systems Unveil GadgetNode Net Plus™ Embedded Control Module at LonWorld2000™

NET+ARM™ processor coupled with 709.1 interface will deliver high speed, high-performance node for distributed control networks

contemporary NetSilicon, Inc. the leading provider of network-enabled, microprocessing solutions for embedded systems, and Adept Systems, a pioneer in porting the LonTalk® protocol to high performance platforms and developer of the C-Reference Implementation of LonTalk for the ANSI/EIA 709.1 Standard Specification, today announced the unveiling and first public demonstrations of GadgetNode Net Plus, a 'SuperNode' for ANSI 709.X (LonTalk) networks. Demonstrations will be held October 18-19 at Echelon's LonWorld2000 conference, in Orlando, Florida (Booth # 106, 108).

The new embedded control module uses NetSilicon's NET+40 processor with Adept's GadgetStack™ and GadgetNIC™ network interface chip to provide a high performance core for compact SuperNodes such as gateways and supervisory control nodes. This GadgetNode Net Plus will offer more memory and greater processor speed and bandwidth than can be provided by current 709.1 solutions.

"Adept's technical leadership in the LonWorks® architecture gives them a significant advantage in developing this new control module," said Cornelius "Pete" Peterson, president and CEO of NetSilicon. "Using the NET+ARM, Adept has developed a very impressive control module with an unparalleled speed."

The GadgetNode Net Plus consists of an ANSI/EIA 709.X (LonTalk) software and hardware interface, including media access control (MAC) and drivers for NetSilicon's system-on-chip. Also included is additional external hardware for the speed-critical functions of the link layer, such as packet framing, encoding, decoding, and CRC checking.

Dr. Samuel Smith, president of Adept Systems, commented, "NetSilicon's network-ready processor platform gives us the ability to rapidly develop these kinds of innovative network control applications. The GadgetNode Net Plus is a result of a successful partnership yielding a truly superior product."

Applications for the "SuperNode" include low-cost, fast gateways between 709.X and Ethernet/IP and other protocols; gateways between LonTalk and other control protocols such as CAN, Profibus, and CEBUS; high speed backbones for 709.1; and higher performance industrial automation systems.

Adept Systems is now taking orders for development kits for the Gadget Node Net Plus.

About Adept Systems and the ANSI 709.1 protocol Adept Systems Inc. developed the C-Reference Implementation of LonTalk for the ANSI/EIA 709.1 Standard Specification and has over six years of experience in developing and testing implementations of the protocol. Adept's GadgetStack is an enhanced cross-platform implementation of the 709.1 protocol. Adept Systems develops software and hardware infrastructure and applications for ANSI 709.1-based systems, as well as provides consulting services for distributed control applications. The company has experience developing 709.1 solutions for both commercial and military customers. Currently, Adept is developing dependable, self-healing, survivable 709.1 network topologies for the U.S. military.

ANSI 709.1 is an open protocol standard used in Echelon® LonWorks control networks. Within the building automation industry, ANSI 709.1 protocol has the most momentum when compared to X10, CEBUS, and other proprietary solutions. The major attraction of LonWorks is the ease of networking through network variables for implicit messaging and addressing. The network variable model is a form of publish and subscribe that is scalable to large networks. In addition, this free topology technology has been installed in millions of devices by such respected manufactures as Leviton, Honeywell, Siemens, Bombardier, Hitachi, Philips, and General Electric.
