University Reaps Benefits of Lasting Relationship

MILWAUKEE –  Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., recently celebrated Alumni Day by unveiling its new on-campus, state-of-the-art HVACR laboratory. The lab features equipment, computers and instrumentation commonly found throughout the nation’s thousands of commercial and industrial buildings. The hands-on lab will help to better prepare students in the university’s HVACR programs for actual working conditions. Included in the equipment is a 10-ton variable air volume, four-zone system that controls cooling, heating and ventilation with a computerized building automation system.

Combination Fire/Smoke Damper Added to Life Safety Damper Line

MILWAUKEE - To reduce the spread of fire and smoke in HVAC systems, Johnson Controls, Inc. is introducing Combination Fire/Smoke Dampers to its Life Safety damper line.

This integrated product combines two dampers in one. The two-position device is tested to 5,000 cycles, intended to prevent the spread of fire (UL 1˝-hour fire rating) as well as smoke (UL Class II 350·F leakage rating). In addition, the product offers:

16-gauge galvanized steel blades; High torque spring to ensure closure during dynamic air flow and allowing it to function as a latch to keep blades closed; Dual linkage; Two heat sensor temperature combinations: 165· and 250·F (74· and 121·C); or 212· and 350·F (100·and 177·C); and Three-year warranty on materials and workmanship. All actuators are factory-mounted outside the air stream and tested with the damper as a matched set. The dampers are factory-matched to fit electric and pneumatic actuators in even-inch widths of 15 to 32 inches and heights of 14 to 48 inches.

The new product is the first phase of Combination Fire/Smoke Dampers to be introduced over the next 12 months by the Johnson Controls HVAC Control Products Group. Additional sizes will be introduced during 2001. High-temperature and direct-mount electric actuators are also under development.
