Louisville, KY (July 24, 2007) — Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare hosted a one-of-a-kind internal preparedness exercise on Tuesday, July 24, 2007.  For the first time, a hospital was able to integrate multiple software platforms, which are used in the day-to-day operations of the facility, to respond to a mock disaster in an effort to improve its actual response capabilities.

The exercise, Operation Rapid Response, demonstrated synergies in advanced technologies, which are used on a daily basis. These technologies, in addition to their normal daily use, enable organizations to quickly access critical information and respond effectively during a major disaster.

Hospital staff responded to a historically-based scenario using FacilityOne, a solution used by Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare for day-to-day facility management, seamlessly integrated with advanced software platforms from Tridium and iMapData.

These web-based solutions were used by incident commanders to provide timely and accurate weather-related and infrastructure data to management, personnel and first responders.  Incident commanders were also able to monitor and control critical infrastructure at multiple healthcare facilities in real-time, without digging for blueprints or being tied to a location-based computer.

“Having accurate information in the critical minutes around any crisis is imperative.  Our goal at JHSMH is to identify technologies to be used in an instant at our command center and to receive factual information in seconds instead of hours following a major disaster,” said Stephan French, vice president of JHSMH Facilities Development.  “JHSMH is a leading healthcare provider.  We are also taking the lead in healthcare disaster preparedness.  As we continue to expand our reach in Kentucky and southern Indiana, we want to test and be assured that we are able to handle a disaster at all of our locations by combining technologies for our city, especially for key infrastructures.”

“JHSMH and its partners are taking a quantum leap forward with Operation Rapid Response's  effort to harness the power of technology to provide critical information to all those who need it, when they need it, in the event of a regional disaster,” said Grace Mastalli, former Director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Information Sharing and Collaboration Office. “Since eighty-five percent of the nation’s critical infrastructure resources reside in the private sector and the vast majority of emergency services are state and local, homeland security truly depends upon business leaders and communities nationwide preparing to respond and recover from foreseeable hazards in today's complex world.”
