Fairhair is an Alliance of leading companies, from the Lighting, Building Automation and IT industry, that aims to facilitate the ‘Internet of Things’ for buildings. The Fairhair Alliance envisions a future where building automation and lighting control systems utilize interoperable systems and link to application eco-systems, such as BACnet, KNX and ZigBee. This will enable a move from proprietary, standalone solutions to a common building network infrastructure that supports the ‘IoT’ of resource constrained devices, including sensors, lamps, luminaires, thermostats, dimmers and so on.

What will Fairhair do?

• The Fairhair Alliance will collect the requirements of the Lighting and Building Automation industries and use this to develop a set of technical specifications for a common IP-based infrastructure, based on open IEEE and IETF standards.
• Fairhair will develop a cost effective and secure IP-based, common network infrastructure, enabling interoperability for resource constrained devices.
• Fairhair will enable certification of the common IT infrastructure, providing approved interoperability and peace of mind, as Lighting and Building Automation systems will be designed to work together.
• The Alliance will liaise with the relevant eco-systems to promote and support adoption of the Fairhair specifications.

Technical objectives of Fairhair The key technical objectives of Fairhair that are needed to create this IP connectivity solution are:

• ‘Draft specifications’ for web services solutions for the BACnet, KNX and ZigBee eco-systems,
• A unified solution for application services closely tied to the network layer, such as service discovery and security.

The scope of Fairhair

Fairhair is intended as a solution for commercial buildings such as, offices, retail outlets, shopping centres, airports, government buildings, factories, warehouses, logistic centres, multi-tenant residential buildings, hospitals, hotels, educational establishments and so on.

• The Fairhair Alliance is a Global organisation and is open for new members.
• The Fairhair Alliance is a Partner Program of IEEE-ISTO.

Benefits of a Fairhair solution
Establishing a common IT infrastructure for lighting and building automation makes it easier for end users to monitor building utilisation, such as energy usage, air quality and so on. For all parties involved in Lighting and Building Automation the aim is to avoid higher costs due to the multiple networks required, non-interoperability and integration challenges.
