Every month there is a blizzard of information contained in the emails and newsletters that cross my desk on their way to AutomatedBuildings.com. Non-Proprietary Controller-to-Controller Communications By Bill Lydon, The improvement of manufacturing productivity and quality requires sharing data and synchronizing controllers. This can now be accomplished by using new standards that were jointly developed by PLCopen and the OPC Foundation.

New Switch website: www.SwitchAutomation.com I know it seems like we do a new website every year. And we do, but this time, Google made us do it. Our last website and the Switch Platform HTML5 User Interface were tightly integrated to provide a seamless experience. Our clever developers had built the whole thing in a One Page App, a very recent technology which only loads the required elements in a page rather than the whole page. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) web crawlers only see one page and do not trawl the entire site so we went from top ranking on terms like IP Intercom to non-existent. We persevered thinking the bots and web crawlers would catch up but in the end it seemed like a good idea to give in and separate the website from the Platform. This entire new site was built in Word Press by Hugh with some graphical input from Andrew.

Big Data in Industrial Automation  By Bill Lydon, Editor  Big data has been a hot topic in the IT world for a few years and now industrial automation vendors are talking about this as well. I attended The Big Data Conference on October 22-23, 2013 in Chicago to learn more. The event was targeted towards business and technology professionals charged with developing their company's big data strategies.

The Future of Real Time Managed Services Delivery  White Paper Focused on Pacific Controls Strategy and Innovation  The next big thing is really about the idea of embedded intelligence, communication, and control in physical systems—biological, electrical, mechanical, and electronic - becoming much more intimately integrated with more general purpose computing and networked systems. Given the immature state of today’s real-world systems, most people have trouble grasping the power and importance these capabilities could potentially inform.

A new guide from Onset, Using Data Loggers to Improve Chilled Water Plant Efficiency, focuses on using data to evaluate the potential positive impacts to overall efficiency by controlling chilled water coil differential temperature. The guide covers how to use portable data loggers at the individual coil level to help assess opportunities for saving energy, and includes a case study describing a real-world deployment and analysis of collected data.

Is your next automation controller an Ethernet switch? By Bill Lydon, Editor  At the 2013 Rockwell Automation Fair, Cisco and Rockwell Automation representatives gave multiple presentations about the "Internet of Everything." The ideas presented by Cisco’s Rob Soderbery, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Enterprise Networking Group, about the future of leveraging embedded computing in Ethernet switches and routers were particularly interesting and thought provoking

Remote commissioning represents the next part of the open standard of the EnOcean Alliance. This is the service layer definition for interoperable commissioning of devices. It defines the communication between the commissioned and target device, which enables an independent development of these devices, but guarantying the highest possible level of interoperability between them. Additionally a standardized device description file is introduced. This enables an flexible description of devices features and capabilities, yet enabling every commissioner to understand it.

When you grow up, do you want to work for Google or in the HVACR industry? The fact is now you can do both! Google is acquiring Nest Labs for $3.2 billion. Nest Labs manufacturers sensor driven, Wi-Fi enabled, self-learning, programmable thermostats and home automation devices. Google is on your computer, on your phone and now going to be part of wiring your HVAC system to the internet. The acquisition of Nest Labs validates that the HVAC industry is at the center of the technological revolution. This is good news for the recruitment of generation Y into the HVACR industry.
