“We just can't find enough people to execute the work we have,” states one Controls Manager.
“We are missing opportunities because
we can’t take care of what we have right now. How can we expand our
business if we can't find enough people?” questions the owner of a controls contracting firm.
As of October 19, 2019, the Association of Controls Professionals
states there are 19,970 BAS job postings listed on the internet.
The vast majority of BAS professionals are gainfully employed, buried in excellence, not looking for new opportunities.
How to develop your talent pipeline for 2020
1. Opportunistic hiring.
Be
ready to hire when a BAS controls professional raises their hand
stating, “Hey, I am open to new opportunities.” If your business is
growing, be prepared to make an opportunistic hire if at all possible.
2. Start the quarter prior.
On
average, it’s taking 4-months to fill an open position. Start your
hiring process the quarter before your budgeted workforce need(s).
3. Have a better story than your competitor.
A good BAS professional will have 2 to 4 job offers within a month. Be willing to pay strongly and competitively. If everything is equal, the firm paying the most wins.
But you can win without breaking the bank. How? Have the best story. (Read, “What’s your company’s story?” http://automatedbuildings.com/news/sep19/articles/basisolutions/190820095808bas.html )
4. Train to retain:
We talk to BAS professionals every day. Here are the top 3 things they tell us are most important to them.
a. Competitive pay & benefits.
b. Challenging & interesting projects.
c. Training. True BAS pro’s want to be constantly learning. There is a far reduced chance you will lose someone if you are providing ongoing training & professional development.
2020
will be here before we know it. September through February are the 5
top hiring months of the year. Except for August (the slowest), the
remaining 6-months are about equal.
Could
there be a slowdown or recession in 2020? Who knows? But if you hire,
train, and retain the right people, you will win business over your
competitor and have less to worry about.
