Securing Buildings News

Every month there is a blizzard of information contained in the emails and newsletters that cross my desk on their way to AutomatedBuildings.com. Some of this information is not in the form of any type of content we can publish but I feel I should share with you these snippets, blog bits, Tweets, LinkedIn posts, and URL links that are about to fall off my desktop.

On a daily basis I tweet as @Ken_Sinclair https://twitter.com/Ken_Sinclair

I actually now have a few moments ;-) https://twitter.com/Ken_Sinclair/moments

Tweet links I think will be of interest and part of our rapid industry evolution.

Also, http://automatedbuildings.com/ maintains this LinkedIn online blog for the magazine, a great place to interact.

I also write a column twice a month for Contractor Mag  http://www.contractormag.com/author/Ken-Sinclair

And a column once a month for facilitiesnet Home of Building Operating Management & Facility Maintenance Decisions Magazines

But I still have stuff falling off my desk I feel I should share.

A Sound Smart Building? Hearables in the Built Environment Published: August 22nd, 2019 Indoor wayfinding has become a prominent smart technology application, where wayfinders follow maps and guidance on their smartphones. When using all-day hearables, guidance can be given by voice, saving time and hassle of handheld devices. In the event of an emergency, building security would be able to send out mass messages or talk directly to specific people/groups.

Technology Report: Generating solutions out there at the edge
Our machines—whether they are fabricating products or processing materials—are evolving into self-sustaining, hyper-intelligent optimization enablers. This is a good thing. And the more that can be accomplished at each machine…at the edge…the faster the data gets transformed into insights, which enable smart solutions. The cloud offers many benefits, of course, but as more tasks get tackled at the edge, more benefits are reaped across the enterprise.Read this report to learn more about edge devices and solutions. Building Backbones - I wish to start us on a re-education path that will redefine our present understanding of what the new Building Backbones might be. Ken Sinclair | Aug 22, 2019  Our internet communication connections—the backbones of building automation systems—are under metamorphic change. They are morphing before our eyes to glass and thin air (fiber and wireless) from the traditional miles of copper wire.

New cybersecurity best practices for...elevators?  We all know about the growing threat of hackers – of customer data being stolen and exposed. But does everyone recognize that this can happen through their elevators and escalators? Most likely, no. That’s why the National Elevator Industry Inc. (NEII), the premier trade association for the building transportation field, alongside cybersecurity experts from major manufacturers, and other global organizations created the Elevator and Escalator Cybersecurity Best Practices.  This guideline is the first of its kind for the industry and therefore, important to digest, designed to impact the codes that keep vertical transportation equipment running efficiently, using the latest innovations as safely as possible.

Technology Report Strengthening the bond, ramping up IT/OT convergence initiatives   No longer strange bedfellows, IT and OT teams now fully grasp that they must work together in this digital era. But even manufacturing teams with the best intentions oftentimes struggle to align data with devices, digital strategies with the assets they govern, and hard-to- change mindsets of professionals on both sides of the IT/OT divide. Of course, the narrower that IT/OT divide, the more seamlessly digital transformations happen, as the features in this report exemplify.
