Johnson Controls Expands Building Integration Through Enhanced Smoke Control

Systems Integration Improves Automated Life-Safety Response to Fire

MILWAUKEE - Johnson Controls, Inc. announced that its Metasys* building management system supports an enhanced life-safety system that can control smoke during a fire using a building's own network communication systems.

The Metasys system integrates traditional environmental systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fire alarm, security and more. By integrating the smoke control system, the Metasys technology enables the building to "respond" to a fire alarm. For example, if a fire were to start on the fifth floor of a building, the building systems would react by decreasing air pressure on the fifth floor while simultaneously pressurizing the floors above and below to contain the smoke, clear evacuation routes and minimize smoke damage.

This solution supports a new set of UL 864 (UUKL) Ethernet communications hardware and Metasys equipment, that together can be configured as a stand-alone building control network or a sub-network that ties into a larger information technology network in a building.
