Budiardjo receives this honor for his exemplary leadership qualities that have made a difference to the industry and his demonstrated ability to carry out the responsibilities that come with his position.

"What makes Budiardjo extraordinary is not just the tremendous influence he has within the building technologies industry or the leadership and management capabilities that have catapulted him into this high-ranking position," says Frost & Sullivan research analyst Sapan Agarwal. "But also is the way he has taken his company beyond the boundaries of the country to give leadership a whole new meaning in this age of globalization."

Budiardjo began his career in 1989 in the field of building automation and quickly became involved in integrating different building systems – an uncommon concept at the time. Capitalizing on his growing experience and expertise, he started his own company, developing and marketing products to both the heat ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry and the security industry in Europe, the United States, and Asia.

In 1997, CSI Control Systems International, Inc. (CSI) acquired his venture, and Budiardjo continued focusing on integration of building systems within CSI (now TAC) until 2002, when he left to start his own commercial venture – Clasma, Inc.

With over 15 years experience working on and promoting the concept of integration, Budiardjo realized that what the industry really lacked was a platform for exchanging views and information. Clasma thus began to facilitate the industry in moving towards integration through conferences such as BuilConn and BuilSpec.

BuilConn was initiated in 2003 in the United States to present an open platform to market participants for interaction, brainstorming, and working on the road map for the future technological direction of the industry.

"Bringing such synergies together under one roof has had a significant impact on the level of market interest and has also helped to establish the importance of subjects such as integration of building control systems and adoption of standard IT practices," notes Agarwal.

Today, BuilConn has started to become a part of the vocabulary in the emerging space in building automation, and giants from the HVAC, security, and lighting industries have demonstrated increased interest in participation in this annual event. BuilConn went to Europe in 2004 not only to repeat the success story of the United States, but also as an effort to define this emerging space in building automation at a global level rather than leaving the task to become a more regionalized phenomenon.

In conjunction with BuilConn, Budiardjo has also initiated the M2M Expo and Conference, another annual event that deals with machine-to-machine technology. In 2004, Budiardjo furthered his efforts of enhancing the awareness levels in the industry by launching BuilSpec across the United States, a series of one-day educational seminars designed for consulting engineers, facility managers, and building owners involved with designing projects amid the prevailing confusion and misinformation in the building automation industry.

All these efforts have found favor with eminent industry organizations, translating into endorsements from LonMark International, BACnet Manufacturers Association, CABA, OASIS, and Open Building Information Xchange (oBIX).

For being a determined executive who believes in his vision, a superior entrepreneur who has placed his company on a steep growth trajectory, and a straightforward leader who not only inspires his employees and colleagues, but the entire industry, Budiardjo is the deserving recipient of the 2005 Building Technologies CEO of the Year Award.

Reliable Controls Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to a CEO who has exhibited leadership excellence within his or her industry. A CEO's vision, risk-taking instinct, and leadership qualities have a profound effect on a company’s performance. The Award also recognizes the executive’s pursuit of a unique restructuring, an organizational management re-engineering, or a competitive road map that boosts the company’s market position.

Held in Naples, Fla., Frost & Sullivan’s Excellence in Industrial Technologies Awards Banquet honors world-class companies and executives for outstanding performance and achievements in their industries. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of distinguished individuals and companies.
